About the Region
This totally unspoilt part of South West France is generally quieter than other regions. However, there is plenty to see and to do should you wish. The climate is beautiful, with long spring and autumn days, and reliably hot summers which stay warm well into the evenings. The county town of Lot-et-Garonne, Agen, is our closest large town, where you can find plenty of shops and restaurants. In the other direction we have Moissac, which is a bustling market town on the banks of the river Tarn. It is famous for its cloisters, which are well worth a visit. There are many historic villages in the area, including Tournon d'Agenais, Beauville with its leisure lake and St Maurin with its abbey ruins (dating from 1097). The more active can go canoeing down the gorges of the river Aveyron at St Antonin de Noble Val, or water skiing at Moissac. You can even arrange a parachute jump at nearby Montaigu de Quercy. There are also, of course, numerous vineyards offering winetasting, from small local producers to the large vignerons of the Cahors region. Food here is excellent value, and many menus feature local produce such as duck and goose, or wild mushrooms. You will need a car to enjoy this part of France. The best route if coming by car from the UK is via Brive and Cahors on the A20. The nearest airports are Toulouse and Bergerac, and the nearest TGV train station is Agen. |
